Wonder by R J Palacio

‘You can’t blend in when you’re born to stand out.’

Wonder is a beautifully written book about a young boy named August (Auggie) who was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him, from going to mainstream school. Because his face has required many reconstructive surgeries, Auggie has been homeschooled. Since there are no more surgeries to be done for a while, Auggie’s parents think that its time for him to go to mainstream school. He wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid but when he starts mainstream school his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. The story begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister and others.

It is a fantastic book for children to read as it teaches them empathy, compassion and acceptance.
